Links for Science and Spirit

by Charlie Reitzel last modified 2006-06-29 18:16

A good introduction to our explorations here is the website Stan Klein put together for the Science and Spirit workgroup that met at the Tikkun conference in July 2005.  Stan was one of the facilitators: http://cornea.berkeley.edu/duality/

A number of other speakers from that conference have home pages

Fritjof Capra

http://www.fritjofcapra.net/

Fritjof Capra, Ph.D., physicist and systems theorist, is a founding director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, California, which promotes ecology and systems thinking in primary and secondary education.

Dr. Capra is on the faculty of Schumacher College, an international center for ecological studies in England, and frequently gives management seminars for top executives.

He is the author of several international bestsellers, including The Tao of Physics, The Turning Point, and The Web of Life. His most recent book, The Hidden Connections, was published this year. He also co-wrote the screenplay for Mindwalk, a film based on his books. This website includes Dr. Capra's resume and full bibliography.

Matthew Fox

www.matthewfox.org

Former Catholic priest Matthew Fox developed the theology of Creation Spirituality as a way to integrate the wisdom of western spirituality and global indigenous cultures with the emerging scientific understanding of the universe and the creativity of art. His home site now features Fox’s 95 THESES:

ARTICLES OF FAITH FOR A CHRISTIANITY FOR THE THIRD MILLENNIUM

In Fox's new book called "A New Reformation!" he proclaims that we are in fact confronted with two churches: one expressed by the image of the Punitive Father, personified by a rigidly hierarchical church structure, repression of the feminine, spreading of homophobia and the elimination of internal dissent; and the other expressed by the feminine figure of Wisdom, personified by a Mother/Father God of justice and compassion. It is time for Christians to choose whom it will follow: an angry exclusionary god or the loving open path of wisdom.

SHORT ABSTRACT FOR TALK: "Mental Properties of Quantum Systems"

Quantum theory was originally formulated in a way that entangled the mental properties of observers with the physical properties of the external systems they were observing, but that excluded the brains and bodies of the observers. This created a theory that was pragmatically useful, but puzzling in many ways. John von Neumann created what appears to be a more rationally coherent theory by incorporating the brains and bodies of the observer into the physical system described by the quantum rules, and dynamically linking the mental properties of the observers to the physical properties of their brains. The basic mental properties, in this theory, are the capacity to grasp as units certain informational structures that can be faithfully represented by appropriate resettings of the state of the brain, and to select, on occasion, certain of these informational structures on the basis of "valuations" that depend on the whole state of the brain. The rules of quantum dynamics then allow these high-level evaluations to influence the behavior of the brain. These developments will be described with an eye on possible applications to man-made quantum devices.

Center for Islam and Science (CIS) is dedicated to the promotion of research and diffusion of knowledge on all aspects of Islam and science. CIS encourages a creative exploration of the Islamic worldview of science, fusion of contemporary scholarship with the traditional sources of Islamic thought and a renewed link with the intellectual tradition of Islam. CIS supports activities aimed at enhancing our religious and scientific understanding of nature and the human condition.

Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences

The mission of CTNS is to promote the creative mutual interaction between theology and the natural sciences.

CTNS is an international non-profit membership organization dedicated to
research, teaching and public service. It focuses on the relation between the natural sciences including physics, cosmology, evolutionary and molecular biology, as well as technology and the environment, and Christian theology and ethics.

Institute for Religion in an Age of Science

www.iras.org

IRAS is a non-denominational, independent society with three purposes:

1. to promote creative efforts leading to the formulation, in the light of contemporary knowledge, of effective doctrines and practices for human welfare;

2. to formulate dynamic and positive relationships between the concepts developed by science and the goals and hopes of humanity expressed through religion;

3. to state human values and contemporary knowledge in such universal and valid terms that they may be understood by all peoples, whatever their cultural background and experience, and provide a basis for world-wide cooperation.

Metanexus

http://www.metanexus.net/metanexus_online/index.asp

The Metanexus Institute advances research, education and outreach on the constructive engagement of science and religion. We seek to create an enduring intellectual and social movement by collaborating with persons and communities from diverse religious traditions and scientific disciplines.

In a spirit of humility and with a deep concern for intellectual rigor, the Metanexus Institute promotes a balanced and exploratory dialogue between science and religion. While mindful of the complexities of this endeavor, we work to develop integrative approaches that enrich the domains of both science and religion.

Wisdom University (formerly Matthew Fox's Institute for Creation Spirituality)

www.wisdomuniversity.org

As the twenty-first century unfolds, there is a critical need for a new way of thinking and acting that applies ancient wisdom to contemporary challenges. In this spirit, the Wisdom University, founded in 1996 by Matthew Fox and now led by its new President Jim Garrison, has changed its name to Wisdom University. In an integrating world, wisdom, which the University understands as the integration of intelligence and compassion, needs to be globalized and creatively applied in the market place of ideas and events shaping the world in order for humanity to build a truly humane global civilization. A sustainable civilization will be a wisdom civilization.

Matthew Fox developed the theology of Creation Spirituality as a way to integrate the wisdom of western spirituality and global indigenous cultures with the emerging scientific understanding of the universe and the creativity of art. Creation Spirituality has its roots in the earliest formulations of the Judeo-Christian wisdom tradition, celebrated by the mystics of this tradition ever since, especially in medieval Europe. Creation Spirituality thus provides a holistic perspective from which to address the critical issues of our times, including the revitalization of religion and culture, the honoring of the feminine, the celebration of hope, the promotion of social and ecological justice, and the promotion of interfaith understanding. In pursuing these goals, Creation Spirituality has sought to revitalize education, ritual, work and spirituality in the spirit of what Fox calls "deep ecumenism."
